What is Stage 2+ Tuning?

Stage 2+ tuning will vary between car manufacturers, models and how they leave the factory. In general it will involve identifying where things can be improved, replacing/upgrading hardware components and updating the software to achieve more power and performance.

How much power/performance increase can I expect from Stage 2 tuning?

Typically, you can expect to see an increase of power anywhere between 55HP and 90HP

What can be improved with a stage 2 tune?

There are several components that are typically looked at with a stage 2 tune:

Exhaust downpipe

On most petrol turbo cars, you would start with the downpipe. This is the section of exhaust directly behind the turbo and by improving the efficiency and reducing the restrictions of the factory configuration we can unlock serious power gains.

The original catalytic converter will need to be replaced with either a de-cat/straight-through pipe or a better-flowing sports catalyst. An e-marked, road-legal sports cat is the only legal option on UK roads.

The standard software the engine comes with is only really tuned for the original catalytic converter, so stage 2 normally means updating software that specifically takes advantage of the increased gas flow on offer.

Air intakes and induction kits

By swapping out parts from the original set-up or replacing them entirely we can ensure that the air going into the engine is as cold as possible and improve the flow of exhaust gases passing through the turbo which will, in turn, improve its performance.

Intercooler

An intercooler cools the air from the turbo before it goes into the engine. Colder air contains denser oxygen, which is what your engine needs to burn petrol. More oxygen = more power. It also helps to limit the effect temperature can have on the various sensors in the engine that try to keep it cool and prevent damage. The sensors will automatically reduce the power to manage this, so cooler air into the engine will reduce how much this happens.

Alone, a high-quality intercooler can increase power, but with a remapped turbo, you’ll notice the difference!

Engine and gearbox mounts

Engine and gearbox mounts are designed to flex and twist. Otherwise, you’d get all of the engine’s vibration in the cabin. Once you start upping the power the engine makes, they can start to flex more than you want them to. Replacing the floppy originals with stiffer aftermarket items can prevent this flex from robbing you of power.

Software (Engine remapping)

Remapping the engine ECU will increase power and take care of performance differences by replacing any hardware. Fitting this hardware without a remap will normally result in the engine reading the altered readings from the exhaust sensors as a fault and displaying the dreaded engine management light.

Great Service as Usual! I have used Liam and Gary many times over the last few years when trust broke down with other Garages. They have recently installed some state of the art tech in my new car and always thrive to ensure they are ahead of the game in terms of innovations – Great Work guys!

  • How does the remap improve the vehicle?

A full engine remap alters the fuel, boost and torque characteristics of the engine. By controlling the fuel pressure, injected fuel quantity, maximum permissible visible smoke limit, boost pressure from the turbocharger and the torque characteristic. A Quantum remap offers a fully controllable change to the engine characteristics, while still operating with full engine feedback control and within all the preset engine sensor limits.

  • Does it affect the manufacturer's warranty?

Some manufacturers’ diagnostic equipment may detect a remap. Additionally, many forward-thinking manufacturers turn a blind eye to a quality remapping service, knowing that a suitably enhanced vehicle can only ever benefit them. The official line from most manufacturers is that if a modification causes a problem with the car, then the part of the vehicle affected will not be covered under warranty, this does not mean a unilateral cancelling of the complete guarantee.

  • What about insurance?

We advise that it is your responsibility to inform your insurance Company of any modification to your vehicle. We are finding that more and more insurance companies are not penalising their customers for saving fuel and recognise our economy upgrades. We can provide a certificate of conformity if required.

  • Do you offer a trial period?

We are very confident that your remap will both improve your driving experience and save you substantially on fuel. But, don’t take our word for it, try the upgrade for 30 days, and if you are not delighted with the results, we will take it off and give you a full refund.

  • What warranty do you give?

A professionally tuned engine will not cause technical faults with a well serviced and maintained the engine. In the extremely unlikely event of a problem we will 100% stand by the quality of our product, should any fault be assessed to have been caused by the upgrade? An optional mechanical breakdown warranty for complete peace of mind is available.

  • Why don't the manufacturers do it?

Manufacturers sell one vehicle that covers various markets, with different tax and emissions regulations; different climates with extremes of heat, cold, humidity; different fuel quantities; different operating altitudes, etc. A manufacturer has to take all of these factors into consideration and make substantial compromises in the operation of the vehicle. Sales and marketing also have a significant effect on the way an engine is mapped. If you look the in manufacturer brochure at the engine specs, the torque graph will rise, then flatten out on a straight line, and then drop off. This obviously isn’t how an engine breathes, and it’s the request of sales and marketing to produce this flat lining of the torque. Why? Well, it’s about having better torque figures than the competition and about local market taxation laws.

  • Is it safe for the vehicle?

Our re-mapping process enhances and optimises the power of the engine within safe limits, not beyond them. The extra power will also result in fewer gear changes. Manufacturers have to build a tolerance for the parts in the engine, to manage the effect of wear and tear, production variations, and to ensure their warranty claims during their warranty period three years, are kept to a minimum. Most race and rally engines are pushed for every last bhp, and thus they more common to fail, while standard car/van/lorry engines are limited back, well away from the probability of multiple failures. Each engine is different as in how much it can be pushed in a remap, but a good ECU remap from a quality ECU tuner will never get close the limits of component failure. You will see that the top companies within the marketplace have all develop vehicle improvements to similar outputs. Beware of tuners who claim significantly more, it’s either lies hoping that the average customer wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, or the engine is being pushed too hard and will quickly become unreliable.

  • What do you do exactly?

Our technicians link to the vehicles ECU or ‘brain’ with a laptop PC through the vehicles diagnostic socket and read the current engine management file which is then sent to our archives office and custom optimised for your vehicle. The technician programs the new optimised file into your vehicle, and you then have the opportunity for yourself to experience the amazing results. On some vehicles, it is not possible to carry out this function be the diagnostic socket so in this case the ECU is removed and either a chip change or boot loading function is performed, direct into the ECU. The final effect is the same, only the process is different. Depending on the vehicle, the chip tuning typically takes less than 1 hour to complete the re-map. You can choose to visit one of our dealers, our head office in Iver or, dependent on the area we can visit you at your home, office.
