3 easy ways to save fuel and improve mileage

Jan 20, 2022

There are 3 quick and simple ways to improve the fuel economy and increase the mileage of your vehicle…

  • Things to do yourself
  • Regular Servicing
  • An ECU Remap

Things YOU can do to improve your fuel economy.

  • Declutter your vehicle & remove unused racks & boxes
  • Regularly check the air pressure of your tyres
  • Be frugal with the aircon

De-clutter your car.

Carrying unnecessary stuff inside your car or van and keeping bike or roof racks (and even roof boxes) on your vehicle when not in use or out of season adds weight and unnecessary drag. The heavier or more wind resistant your vehicle, the more fuel it takes to move it!

Regularly check the air pressure of your tyres.

Checking your tyre pressure shouldn’t be just before going on holiday! It really does pay to keep your tyres at optimum pressure throughout the year and this little tip can give you up to 5% better fuel economy!

Be frugal with your aircon.

Research has found that by using your air conditioning to control the climate of your vehicle, you can actually increase your fuel consumption by around 8-10%.
Regular servicing will maintain fuel economy & mileage

The RAC has produced this andy guide on How to save fuel

Regular servicing will maintain fuel economy & mileage

To help maintain the manufacturers stated fuel economy and mileage (and to keep your car/van in tip-top condition) it is essential that you take your vehicle for regular servicing.

Depending on the make and model of your car/van manufacturers recommend between 2 & 3 services a year. But there are factors we take into consideration such as how many miles you have driven… the mileage indicates whether a small or interim service is needed or full annual service.

The key service items that have an impact on fuel efficiency are…

  • Air Filters
  • Oil Change
  • Spark Plugs
  • Engine & Fuel Componenents

Air Filter.

A dirty Air Filter can reduce your fuel economy by up to 10%. Newer engines with computer management systems are usually able to pick up on a dirty filter and feed the engine less fuel to compensate. Even though, it is still a good idea to keep your filters reasonably clean for optimum fuel efficiency.

Oil Change.

As your oil ages, it becomes thick like syrup and makes it harder for it to do its job. Recommended intervals for an oil change vary massively depending on the age of your car and type of oil used, but at the very least it should be changed once a year.

Using the correct grade of oil is also important, so check out the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Spark Plugs.

All it takes is one dirty misfiring spark plug to decrease your mpg by 7%. Make that two misfiring plugs and you’re down 20% in fuel efficiency.

Engine & fuel components.

Fuel injectors and engine components can get gummed up over time with residuals of fuel & oil and the best way to restore your vehicle to its original state is to run a quality fuel cleaner through your tank every year.

An engine remap will improve performance AND fuel economy.

Eco remaps are becoming more and more popular. As fuel prices have risen and our roads return to being congested, motorists and businesses have been looking for a way to improve their vehicle economy in an effective, reliable, and safe way. A remap delivers this.

To explain quickly, remapping, sometimes called ECU tuning, is when the settings of a car’s ‘engine control unit’ (ECU) is altered to improve several areas of the vehicle’s performance. By overwriting the existing settings with new software, we can re-programme your car/van to manage the fuel injection, airflow, sensors and more (within legal limitations). Car manufacturers test hundreds of variations of these maps before choosing one which makes the best use of the car’s components to deliver economy, performance, and longevity. (Strangely, the maps used can differ depending on the country you live in!)

Depending on the make, model and age of your car or van the performance and economy improvements will vary. But with some modern vehicles, you can see improvements of up to 30%, which makes you wonder why these maps aren’t implemented by the manufacturer.

Many businesses are already aware of this fact and we have experienced a large increase in fleet vehicles and trades vans being remapped to improve fuel economy and save thousands of pounds a year.
